Mum Wakes Up From Coma After Hearing The Cries Of Her Newborn Baby
A blood clot broke loose during the emergency C-Section operation, which caused the new mum to fall into coma.
After giving birth to her first born last year, 23-year-old Shelly Cawley from North Carolina fell into a coma for hours. Her husband and doctors feared for the worst.
Shelly Cawley wasn't waking up. The then 23 year old from Concord, North Carolina, had just had an emergency C-section and doctors had to put her under. After several hours, they were getting worried that she hadn't woken up.
people.comShelly's husband, Jeremy Cawley was distraught and braced himself for the possibility of losing her wife and the mother to his first child
Her husband, Jeremy Cawley, 35, remembers feeling helpless standing at his wife's bedside in the intensive care unit. "The doctors had done all they could and it was clear, they absolutely thought they were losing her at this point," he tells PEOPLE.
people.comWhen all hope seemed lost, Ashley Manus, one of Shelly's nurses, had an idea - by allowing her to have skin-to-skin contact with the infant
"We're a big proponent of skin-to-skin [contact]. We believe it has great benefits for the mom and the baby, and we just thought it can't hurt, might as well give it a try," she says.
So Manus and an ICU nurse stripped Rylan down and gently put her on her comatose mother's chest. "I was hoping somewhere deep down, Shelly was still there and could feel her baby, hear her baby and her mother's instincts would come out and she would realize, 'This is where I need to be.' " Manus says.
However, Rylan was so at peace, she fell asleep as she lay on her mum. Jeremy and the medical staff had to make her cry.
"Rylan went right to sleep. It's not but we needed. We needed Ryland to cry. That's what the nurses were saying. We were poking, and tickling to get Ryland to make some noises, but she was so happy that wasn't happening right away. Once she did… when she started crying out- I think it really got inside Shelly and woke her up."
wcnc.comWhen she finally cried, something amazing happened - Shelley's vitals started to spike!
“They say they saw a spike in my vitals when she did cry,” Shelly said. “They think that me hearing her subconsciously gave my body and my subconscious a reason to fight. That I still needed to be there for my baby.”
