Quick Ride, a joint venture between Koperasi Amanah Pelaburan Berhad (KAPB) and Cartrade Group, recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Proton and Uber to offer such services.

For a start, the company will be leasing 1,000 Proton cars to qualified drivers. The number will likely increase to 10,000 over the next two years.

The Star Online quoted KAPB executive chariman Datuk IIyas Mohamed as saying that successful applicants will have to pay a deposit of RM1,000 for a three-year lease.

After that, they can choose to either lease a brand new Proton Saga 1.3L Standard CVT at RM45 per day, or the Proton Persona 1.6L Standard CVT at RM55 per day.

Maintenance fees (except for tyres and fuel), road tax, and insurance will be covered by Quick Ride.

Vehicles leased from Quick Ride will also be outfitted with WiFi and a tablet for passengers to use.

Since the leasing programme was introduced last month, almost 400 people have applied, with over 50% of applicants under the age of 26

Mohamed Fahmi Ilyas from Cartrade told NST that applicants who may wish to terminate the leasing contract before the three-year period ends will be given the choice to pay a penalty or follow through with a seven-year hire purchase.

"If let say after six months they decide to quit, they will be given a penalty of six weeks to two months to return the car. However, if they wish to own the car they can apply to convert the contract from a lease to higher purchase," he said.

To be eligible, applicants must be a Malaysian, aged 21 years old and above, hold a valid license, and does not have any criminal record
