Petaling Jaya (PJ) residents will be receiving brand new rubbish bins for free this year. The Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) have spent RM8 million on these new bins.

Free Malaysia Today (FMT) reported today, 24 January, that the MBPJ will be distributing 74,000 rubbish bins for landed residential properties in PJ.

MBPJ's public relations officer, Zainun Zakaria explained that the 120-litre bins can hold 60kg of waste.

"We hope the standardisation of the bins will improve waste collection."

"Compared with the old bins, which have to be lifted manually, these new bins will be much easier for the garbage compactor trucks to pick up," added Zainun.

Zainun explained that the distribution has been separated into two phases and under Phase One which started on 6 January, 9,000 bins are being distributed at a cost of around RM1 million

Kampung Chempaka, Ara Damansara, and Sri Damansara have already received the free bins.

Zainun also said that the areas involved in the first phase are the kampung (villages) and single-storey residential schemes.

Meanwhile, Phase Two of MBPJ's new rubbish bin distribution will see the purchase of another 65,000 bins which is estimated to cost around RM7 million

It was also said that 18 contractors have been hired by the MBPJ to service the garbage collection in all the housing areas.

"Currently, each contractor has four workers for each compactor. With the new bins, the contractors will be able to reduce their manpower. They will not need workers to lift the bins into the compactor," said Zainun.

While residents will be provided with free bins, business owners, on the other hand, are required to buy their own bins.

"They'll have to display their 240-litre bins outside or near their premises. Those who fail to do so will be fined RM150," added Zainun.
