Seputeh MP Teresa Kok will be charged with sedition tomorrow over her controversial Chinese New Year video "Onederful Malaysia", in which she allegedly insulted Muslims and the nation’s leaders.

Kok’s aide Alice Lan said the Seputeh MP will be charged at the Duta High Court at 9.30am tomorrow.

Her lawyer, Sankara Nair, said he has been told to produce Kok at the Kuala Lumpur sessions court tomorrow. "I have been told by the police to produce her in court tomorrow morning to be charged under the Sedition Act," he told theSun today. Sankara said Kok is being charged under Section 4 (1)(c) of the Sedition Act which relates to "publishing, selling, or offering to sell seditious material".

"My opinion is that it (Onederful Malaysia) is a benign political satire that is not seditious, and does not contain any seditious tendencies; as a lawyer, I think it's cruel to charge her (Kok) with this," he said.

DAP national organising committee chief Anthony Loke slammed the prosecution of Kok as “ridiculous” and exposed the hypocrisy practiced by the Najib government. “I think this is ridiculous. It is just a political satire and you want to charge her for sedition? This shows clear double standards practiced by the government,” he told Malay Mail Online.

Meanwhile in Penang, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said the charge is an abuse of power to eliminate Opposition politicians. "They (Barisan Nasional) cannot win the by-elections so they try to disqualify Opposition MPs using the Attorney-General," he told theSun, pointing out that BN only obtained 48% of the popular vote in the last general election.

March 2014: Home Ministry Admits Misinterpreting Teresa Kok's Controversial 'Onederful' Malaysia CNY Video

Home Ministry U-Turns Statement About Teresa Kok's Controversial 'Onederful' Malaysia CNY Video

Image via themalaymailonline.com

The Home Ministry has finally admitted that Seputeh MP Teresa Kok's controversial Chinese New Year video clip "Onederful Malaysia" did not insult the prime minister.

themalaysianinsider.com

This comes after the ministry released a "wrong" statement in Parliament last week, claiming that the satirical video was insulting and had poked fun at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak. Kok said she received the official explanation from the deputy home minister yesterday, adding that the ministry's reply only referred to the statement and reports made by Malay NGOs.

msn.com

Last week, the DAP vice-chairman had urged the ministry to retract its earlier statement, saying that its minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had broken parliamentary rules by "clearly misinterpreting" the truth.

yahoo.com

"Obviously, this is not what we are asking for but I am still glad that the deputy home minister has made the corrections and explained the confusion," she said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby today. "I have received the answer and because of that, I will not propose any motion to report the deputy minister to the parliamentary committee.

A non-governmental organisation (NGO) calling itself Gabungan NGO Pro BN has issued an ultimatum to Seputeh member of parliament Teresa Kok to prove the existence of pirates in Sabah within 14 days, or else face a law suit.

themalaysiantimes.com.my

“It’s definitely her intention to embarrass Sabahans, to tarnish the state’s image. She clearly stated “you can visit Sabah and see pirates with bonus shows of kidnapping and shooting episodes”, the NGO’s president Zulkaranain Mahdar claimed today.

Zulkarnain further claimed that he received many queries from his friends about the clip which purportedly portrayed Sabah as still having pirates.

He was also of the opinion that the shooting scenes in the clip made fun of the security forces and may hurt the feelings of the widows of the personnel who died defending the nation in the Lahad Datu intrusion, February last year.

MCA Says Chinese New Year Is Not A Time To Belittle Our National Leaders Or Jeopardise The Nation's Image

MCA : VERY HURTFUL, Teresa Kok has tarnished the image of the country .

Image via themalaysiantimes.com.my

“Teresa Kok has tarnished the image of the country, national leaders and MCA. The descriptions used by the actors are very hurtful. Even worse, besides an absence of patriotism, practices which Kok and DAP deploy to score political mileage are unethical; more so, with the date of the Kajang by-election due to be announced anytime soon.

themalaysiantimes.com.my

“The timing of the release of Kok’s video during Chinese New Year is the lowest form of disrespect to the Chinese community and culture. Welcoming the new Lunar New Year is an occasion for celebration, upholding family values, togetherness, imparting goodwill and auspiciousness, and not an occasion nor opportunity to belittle our national leaders or jeopardise the nation’s image”, slams Heng in a statement send to The Malaysian Times (TMT) today.

The Seputeh MP Says The Video Is Not An Insult To Malays

Pro-Umno groups and Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal should stop making a fool of themselves by hurling false allegations about a Chinese New Year video clip, says Seputeh MP Teresa Kok. “Shafie and the pro-Umno groups clearly do not understand political satire and because of that they try to incite racial sentiment by using the video clip to cover up their failures in managing the country,” she said.

She denied that it insulted Malays, the security forces, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife.

“I hope they stop it as the false allegations can cause racial tension. They should research on Mandarin and Cantonese before making baseless accusations as they are only embarrassing themselves," Kok said in a statement.

"Clearly, among the first persons that need to be educated about political satires are Umno Cabinet ministers like Shafie and Ahmad Shabery," he said, adding that Kok should be congratulated instead of being criticised for her video, which at press time has attracted close to 200,000 views on YouTube since it was uploaded last week.
