What was wrong with that escalator? Sunway Pyramid reveals their findings

The Sunway Pyramid mall management has issued an official statement today, 6 March, to update the public about the escalator mishap which caused a female shopper to suffer a bad gash on her calf.

"During investigation, findings have shown that there had been misuses to the escalator prior to the occurrence, including baby strollers and other lack of escalator etiquettes that are contributing factors to aggravating the escalator prior to the incident."

"The Management of the mall together with OTIS and the Department of Occupational Safety & Health have examined various sources and will continue to work with the relevant authorities for further updates," the statement read.

Sunway Pyramid also said that it will step up its safety measures to minimise the occurrence of such an incident

"Sunway Pyramid assures that all escalators in the mall have been following a strict schedule for maintenance with OTIS and that our customers’ safety is always a priority."

"Moving forward, Sunway Pyramid will be introducing unipoles at all escalator take-offs and landings to curb strollers, trolleys, wheelchairs or any form of similar items from the escalator."

A unipole is usually placed at the centre of the escalator platforms to minimise the pathway, but it will not obstruct any normal being from passing through.

Meanwhile, the management also said that the victim is recovering well and is currently in good care at a nearby hospital.
