This Pet Store In Malaysia Doesn't Sell Pets. Here's Why It Works

She was RM300,000 in debt. Now her pet store is saving lives.

In a world where pet shops often prioritise sales and profits, Jeyanthi Nadesen — better known as Jay — has taken a different path

What began as a small pet store has grown into a business that champions animal welfare, proving that you don't need to sell pets to be successful.

Jay's journey didn't always revolve around animals. Originally from Kelantan, she holds a degree in Accounting Information Systems and spent four years in the construction industry before making a bold career switch in 2010.

"I had no experience, no savings, and no idea how I would survive, but something told me I had to try," she recalled in an interview with SAYS.

Starting with just a small shop, she initially sold pets and accessories.

However, after witnessing the neglect and abandonment of animals firsthand, she knew she had to change direction.

By 2015, Jay made the life-changing decision to stop selling pets entirely.

Instead, she shifted her focus to rehoming rescued animals and educating pet owners — but the move wasn't easy.

People laughed at me. They said I was crazy — how can a pet shop survive without selling pets?

Struggling with RM300,000 in debt, she even considered shutting down

"I was barely covering vet bills and salaries. I did house calls for RM10 per visit just to stay afloat," she added.

But instead of giving up, Jay restructured her business model. She brought in a business partner, made strategic changes, and turned her store into a hub for responsible pet ownership.

J Jay Pet Station now specialises in the adoption and care of small animals, including rabbits, hamsters, hedgehogs, and even sugar gliders.

The adoption process isn't about quick transactions — it's about finding the right home

"We interview potential adopters to understand their experience, lifestyle, and commitment level.

"We also offer a one-month trial period. If things don't work out, they can return the pet for a refund. After a month, they can still return the pet, but the fee won't be refunded," she explained.

This approach has led to many heartwarming success stories

One adopter who later migrated overseas took their pet along rather than leaving it behind.

Another adopter continues to send yearly updates about their beloved pet, Pablo, reminding Jay why her work matters.

Of course, the road hasn't been smooth.

"People still don't understand adoption fees. They think we're making money, but the fees cover medical expenses like vaccinations, neutering, and basic care," Jay clarified.

Another challenge is shifting public perception. "Many still believe pets should be bought, or they underestimate the responsibility," she said.

Adoption isn't a trial — it's a lifetime commitment.

"Senior pets, in particular, are often overlooked in favour of younger animals."

To address these challenges, J Jay Pet Station focuses on continuous education

"We're constantly raising awareness about responsible pet ownership. If you can't adopt, you can still help by fostering, donating, or even just spreading the word."

Beyond adoption, Jay's business also offers high-quality pet products under its own brand, including premium hay, custom-made wooden accessories, and 100% natural treats.

"We only sell what's necessary and healthy for pets," she emphasised.

Despite the financial and emotional struggles, Jay has no regrets.

"This journey has been tough, but seeing animals find loving homes makes it all worth it."

Her story is a testament to the fact that businesses can thrive while making a difference. And in a world where too many animals are abandoned, we need more people like Jay — people who are willing to put their hearts before profits.

If you're thinking about adopting a pet, remember: It's not about getting an animal — it's about giving them a home for life.
