Malaysia Airlines Looks Back On 50 Years Of Flying To London With Special Kebaya Uniforms
There will also be a chance to win two flight tickets to London!
To commemorate 50 years since it started flying to London, Malaysia Airlines is having a special showcase featuring iconic kebaya uniforms!
Titled Heritage in the Skies, the showcase will feature six designs worn by Malaysia Airlines cabin crew members on selected flights from 3 to 16 November.
Each design represents a significant part of the evolution of Malaysia Airlines' iconic uniform since its debut in 1963, when the airline kicked things off with a chilli red Sarong Kebaya featuring a traditional kutu baru bodice and nine pleats.
In the decades since, there have been multiple variations of the uniform, such as an earth-toned patterned design in 1967, an updated version of the original with batik motifs in 1972, a nature-focused look with green, blue, and yellow hues in 1976, and even a complete redesign in 1986 which featured a combination of traditional batik with Sarawakian kelarai (a chequered weave pattern passed down as a craftwork through generations in Malay and Southeast Asian cultures).
In 1992, the uniform was again revised by Italian fashion house Gherardini, which added local floral patterns to the overall design.
In its current form, the Malaysia Airlines kebaya uniform is hailed among the best-looking cabin crew outfits in the world. Improving upon the famous Gherardini design, the latest uniform has deeper hues of pink and purple, melding bamboo and kelarai motifs with local flowers such as champak, jasmine, and hibiscus.
Excited to see all these designs in person, but not sure if you'll catch them on your flight? Don't worry.
There will be a special exhibit featuring all these designs up close!
As part of the showcase, all six uniform designs will be available for public viewing at the Departure Hall, Level 5, KLIA Terminal 1 (next to Nööödles) from 3 to 14 November, so don't miss your chance to appreciate these timeless looks in person!
In addition, to include everyone as part of this heritage, Malaysia Airlines is hosting a fun social media contest with flight tickets up for grabs!
