Sometimes, a person can be overwhelmed by life's inevitable challenges but it is possible to overcome them by establishing a support system.
The truth is, people need a safe environment where they can trust and confide in, and it can be found in the form of a certified therapist who offers sound counselling.
Unfortunately, there are common misconceptions about counselling, with people associating it with "trouble" or only for the "crazy" and mentally ill.
Think about it: How many of us thought counselling was only meant to correct the naughty kids in school?
However, it's encouraging to note that more people are starting to willingly seek help from mental health professionals nowadays
Psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors are all professional mental health providers but the key differences lie in the different types of education and training they've gone through to obtain their credentials.
With that said, here are some things that you should look out for when searching for counselling service:
1. Pay attention to their qualifications and training. You'll want to put your trust in professionals who have obtained their knowledge from legit and reputable institutions.
2. Check if they're registered with any governing body such as the Malaysian Board of Counsellors (Lembaga Kaunselor Malaysia) which issue licenses for counsellors. Take note that there is currently no official statutory regulation of the practice of psychology in Malaysia, so professional psychologists are not regulated.
3. Credible practitioners are usually affiliated to reputable professional organisations and accredited to the respective professional societies.
Speaking of which, here is a list of places that offer professional counselling services in the Klang Valley region:

At the end of the day, what matters is that you're in a collaborative working relationship with your therapist and it should be with someone you can trust
It's important to remember that counselling does not seek to offer a quick and easy solution to the challenging situation that you're in.
Always keep an open mind as your counsellor facilitates the process of problem-solving through professional guidance to discover solutions applicable to your unique situation.
