A 10-year-old boy in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, took his parents' car for a joyride with his 9-year-old neighbour, resulting in a crash involving two other vehicles yesterday, 4 September

According to Seremban district police chief ACP Mohamad Hatta Che Din, the incident took place at around 9.30pm when the boy, driving a Toyota Corolla with his neighbour as a passenger, lost control of the vehicle.

"The boys were driving from the Arowana Impian apartments towards Taman Arowana Impian," he said, adding that the car skidded while navigating a curve and collided with a parked van.

The impact caused the van to hit a Perodua Kancil parked in front of it, he added.

Fortunately, the boys escaped unharmed in the crash

The case is being investigated under Sections 39(1) and 111 of the Road Transport Act 1987, Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, and Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001.

Section 39(1) prohibits persons under the age of 16 from driving a motor vehicle on a public road, while Section 111 deals with the offence of allowing an unlicensed person to drive a motor vehicle, and is applicable in cases where a minor is driving without a valid license.

Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 specifies the requirements for obtaining a driving license, including age restrictions.

Meanwhile, Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001 places a duty on parents or guardians to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their children, which applies in cases where minors are involved in traffic accidents.
