A black cobra was discovered at Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's home yesterday evening, 20 February

According to Bernama, the one-metre long black cobra was first spotted among decorative foliage by the guardhouse post of the prime minister's residence.

"One of the five security personnel saw the black cobra while on duty at the post," said Hulu Langat District Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) officer KPL Mior Norazlan Safian.

The Hulu Langat district APM station received the distress call at about 7.33pm and dispatched four members to the scene.

The black cobra was successfully caught by APM personnel using specialised equipment

The snake reportedly weighed around 800g and has been contained by the authorities.

The black cobra is a highly-venomous creature, capable of causing irritation, inflammation, and blisters when its venom comes in contact with skin.

Depending on whether the snake found at Anwar's home is of the spitting variant, black cobras can eject venom from its fangs from over seven feet when threatened.

This defense mechanism is usually aimed at their victim's eyes and can cause blindness if no medical attention is provided immediately.

The black cobra is generally a sensitive and shy creature but will attack even with the slightest provocation. Therefore, do not approach them if you encounter these animals in the wild.
