[BREAKING] KWSP Building Next To Federal Highway Is On Fire Again After 5 Years
This is the second time the building has caught fire after the first incident on 12 February 2018.
The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) building on Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya caught fire today, 22 May
According to photos and videos on Twitter, the top floors of the building can be seen engulfed in flames.
The fire seems to be concentrated in the middle section of the building, with rubble falling down onto the ground. A lower floor is also ablaze, as seen in a one-minute video.
The tweet posted at 11.04am noted that they were waiting for the Fire and Rescue Department to arrive.
A separate 13-second video, which is believed to be taken much later, shows most of the building burnt black
The building, which also caught fire five years ago on 12 February 2018, was originally white and beige in colour.
Photos found on Twitter also show that the fire emitted thick smoke into the sky, which could be seen from tens of kilometres away.
It is understood that the building has been left empty since the 2018 fire
Reporting on the incident this morning, Free Malaysia Today mentioned that the 63-year-old office building was scheduled to reopen in late 2024 as a state-of-the-art senior living facility.
The fire in 2018 sparked a national discussion about the use of polyethylene, or polyfoam, as cladding.
The material is infamously flammable, which caused the Grenfell Tower tragedy in the UK that killed 71 people in 2017.
However, no one was injured in the 2018 fire at the EPF building located next to Federal Highway.
