A man and a woman, aged 26 and 25, were involved in a car accident when their vehicle skidded and caught fire after being overloaded with stolen oil palm bunches.

The incident, which occurred in Merlimau, Melaka, last week, resulted in their arrest after they reported the accident to claim insurance compensation.

According to Harian Metro, Jasin district police chief DSP Ahmad Jamil Radzi said that the police received a report last Thursday, 3 October, regarding the theft of 30 bunches of oil palm from an unfenced plantation owned by SD Guthrie Bhd.

During a routine inspection, the plantation workers discovered that 21 trees had been harvested, with 30 bunches of oil palm, valued at around RM500, missing.

The last inspection held before the incident was on 30 September, and it showed that the oil palm tree bunches were still intact, with only traces of old cuts visible.

Four days after the accident, the couple reported the crash to claim insurance compensation, but authorities quickly linked them to the stolen oil palm bunches

Ahmad Jamil said their vehicle, which caught fire near the scene, likely skidded due to the weight of the stolen load.

Further investigations revealed that the male suspect has five prior criminal records and one narcotics case, while his partner has two criminal and narcotics cases.

The couple was arrested in the compound of Merlimau police station on Tuesday, 8 October.
