Dr M Undergoes Self-Quarantine After Coming In Close Contact With A COVID-19 Positive MP

The 94-year-old lawmaker said the quarantine does not pose much hardship for him.

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has been told to undergo self-quarantine since Wednesday, 18 March, after coming into close contact with a lawmaker who tested positive for COVID-19

A spokesman confirmed with New Straits Times last night, saying that the 94-year-old Langkawi lawmaker has been in quarantine since the day the Restriction of Movement Order began.

"Yes, second-day quarantine. He is alright," the spokesperson said.

It is learned that Dr Mahathir came into close contact with Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii Lee Wuen who is currently receiving treatment for the virus that causes COVID-19

On Tuesday, 17 March, Dr Yii had confirmed in a Facebook post that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital.

The Bandar Kuching MP is believed to have contracted the coronavirus from Sarikei MP Andrew Wong, who also tested positive for the virus. In an update post yesterday, 19 March, Dr Yii assured the public that he is not suffering from any severe symptoms and is healthy.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with TV3 yesterday, Dr Mahathir shared that the quarantine does not pose much hardship for him

He said it is a religious obligation to comply with the quarantine, contending that everyone should first make efforts to improve the situation before resorting to prayers.

"We must be vigilant and rein in ourselves," said the nonagenarian MP.

"If we need to isolate ourselves for 14 days, that is okay because it is for the good. This is our bid to fulfil our religious obligations, which is to make our effort before Allah fulfils our prayers."

He also urged every Malaysian to adhere to the RMO so that the virus will stop spreading.
