"He Is A Brave Man" — Azalina On Anwar's Call For A Vote Of Confidence In Himself

She said that most prime ministers would not want a motion of confidence.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's decision to call for a motion of confidence to test his leadership has been dubbed as "brave"

This is according to Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.

Azalina, who is the Minister of Law and Institutional Reform in the Prime Minister's Department, said that under the Westminster System, any member of parliament (MP) could call for a vote of confidence.

But for Anwar to do the same — despite having a decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to lead through a grand coalition — shows that he is a brave man as he wants the MPs to show their support for him.

"For the Prime Minister, who has gotten the decree from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and (the support of) a grand coalition, to call for a motion of confidence, he is a brave man, because he wants the parliamentarians to show their support for him," Malaysiakini quoted her as saying.

Azalina added that most prime ministers would not want a motion of confidence.

Anwar, who was sworn in as Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister on 24 November, had announced that the first parliamentary sitting on 19 December will see him table a vote of confidence towards him

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairperson made the announcement after Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairperson Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin cast doubts over the number of MPs backing the Prime Minister.

"Right now, Muhyiddin has challenged our strength, which he does not need to do because I'm not a prime minister like him. In fact, I have asked PH to propose a vote of confidence on the first day of parliament," Anwar said during his first-ever press conference after being sworn in.
