On Sunday, 21 April, while attending an Islamic conference in Washington DC, Shaymaa passed by a group of angry men holding signs against Islam.
According to the Guardian, the men were shouting that she and her friends were going to hell. In response, she crouched in front of them and flashed a peace sign.
Shaymaa says she wanted them to see "how happy I was to be me"
"I wanted to show them that we are going to remain kind and unapologetic, and continue to spread love in the face of bigotry," she said, as reported by the Guardian.

Shaymaa's photos have since gone viral
On Instagram, her post has been liked over 200K times.
And on Twitter, where Shaymaa shared a set of three photos that she posed for in front of the protesters, her post has been retweeted over 65k times.
