A school for students with special needs, especially autistic children, will be built in Pulai, Johor, according to State Education and Information Committee chairperson Aznan Tamin

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi proposed the idea to Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, at the end of last year, reported Bernama.

Aznan stated that the announcement of the school's construction will be the best 'gift' for parents with autistic children in Johor, who hope their children can continue to develop learning and self-care skills.

"The details on the school project will be announced by the Education Ministry," he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

There has been a drastic increase in autistic children over the last 10 years, with 53,323 diagnosed last year, according to IndeBrain Occupational Therapy Solutions' Siti Noraisikin Mohd Jazuli

She highlighted the lack of facilities for special children at schools, particularly in the Integrated Special Education Programme.

"While there are Early Intervention Centres in Malaysia to meet the needs of special children, particularly those with autism, the main problem is often the cost.

"The cost of sending children to private centres is relatively higher compared to mainstream schools.

"We welcome the announcement through the Budget 2025 to provide facilities and give priority to children with special needs," she stated.
