Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin recently paid a visit to Thailand to study the possibility of legalising cannabis for medical use in Malaysia
According to the Ministry of Health (MOH), he was invited by Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul, for a four-day visit starting 22 August.
Bernama shared photos of the Health Minister visiting the indoor and outdoor greenhouses of Siam Cannabis Land, which is one of the cannabis research centres in the country.

He explained that he was there to better understand the clinical evidence and regulatory framework for the use of cannabis for medical purposes

Thailand is the first country in Asia to legalise cannabis for medical reasons

"The visit represents an ideal platform for the MOH to understand the advances in international research and findings to support the clinical use of cannabis," according to the MOH in a statement on Monday, 22 August, reported Bernama.
"The visit also opens international collaboration opportunities for the private and research entities undertaking clinical studies on cannabis and ketum, as they develop medical innovations that will further improve the quality of healthcare in Malaysia."
Medical cannabis, or medical marijuana, has long been used in other countries as pain relief
It has many uses, including treatment for children with rare, severe forms of epilepsy; adults with vomiting or nausea caused by chemotherapy; and those with muscle stiffness and spasms caused by multiple sclerosis.
Just as synthetic drugs cannot help certain health conditions, medical marijuana is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. However, it does have its benefits as a pain reliever, which come from some of its compounds known as cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD).
