The Coliseum Café in Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman in Kuala Lumpur, famous for its Hainanese-Western cuisine since 1921, is closing down

The decision to permanently close the historic out was taken after the tenancy of the café in a pre-war building next to the Coliseum Cinema expired, according to a report in The Malaysian Insight.

"Yes, it's closed for good," said the restaurant franchise's marketing manager Azrain Azman.

The iconic Coliseum Café never got to celebrate its 100th anniversary

The 100th anniversary was planned for this year.

"We are saddened that we couldn't celebrate our 100th anniversary. We hadn't been able to sustain since the first movement control order (MCO). We relied on dine-ins and the regulars who used to visit the café couldn't come because the city was in lockdown," Azrain was quoted as saying in the report.

Other Coliseum Café outlets, however, will remain open

In February this year, Prestige Malaysia had featured the KL outlet in its list of eight oldest restaurants in Asia that are at least 100 years old.

The outlet had been a must-visit for those looking to indulge in a bit of nostalgia for old Malaya.

A vintage advertisement from the 1920s shows the Coliseum Café was "where everybody goes".
