A plant-based food brand is facing backlash for featuring turmeric leaves in an advertisement about banana leaf rice

On 22 October, the brand posted a "step-by-step guide to prepare banana leaf rice" video featuring its plant-based product.

The caption read, "Let's cook up a Malaysian favourite with a twist! Healthy, delicious, and plant-based goodness on your plate!"

However, eagle-eyed netizens quickly pointed out that turmeric leaves were used in the video instead of banana leaves, which are traditionally used as a serving base for the dish

Many also questioned the inclusion of an egg in the recipe, especially since the post was hashtagged #vegan.

Others noted that boiled eggs are not a typical accompaniment for banana leaf rice.

Expressing their disappointment, many Indian Malaysians called out the brand for misrepresenting the dish and their culture in the advertisement.

Expressing their disappointment, many also wondered why the Instagram post had been up for two days and remained unaddressed by the brand.
