PM: Emergency Is Not A Military Coup And A Curfew Will Not Be Enforced

Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin assured that the civilian government will continue to function.

Following the proclamation of emergency in Malaysia, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin assured that it is not a military coup

He appeared in a special live address today, 12 January.

"Allow me to explain further regarding the form of emergency that is enforced in this country. I would like to stress that the emergency proclamation secured from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is not a type of a military coup. A curfew will not be enforced," he said.

Instead, throughout the period of emergency, the civilian government will continue to function

In terms of government administration, the Cabinet and the State Executive Council will continue to function according to the Federal Constitution of Malaysia and any ordinances issued by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Muhyiddin added that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong is entitled to issue any ordinances he deems appropriate from time to time.

He said, "In this context, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can proclaim several emergency ordinances for the purpose of curbing the spread of COVID-19 infection which entails matters regarding the use of private hospital assets, taking temporary ownership of private hospital land, or to make a request to use the resources of private hospitals for the purpose of treating COVID-19 patients."
