Police Have Arrested The Taman Mutiara MRT Assaulter

The 26-year-old was arrested in Taman Cheras yesterday, 18 February.

A 26-year-old man who violently assaulted and robbed a woman at the Taman Mutiara MRT station recently has been arrested by the police

According to Malay Mail, the man was arrested in Taman Cheras at 8.10pm yesterday, 18 February. 

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim confirmed that the 26-year-old was detained by a Serious Crimes Investigation Department (D9) team from the Cheras district police headquarters. 

The police chief revealed that prior to the brutal assault at the Taman Mutiara MRT station, the suspect had robbed a 24-hour convenience store

Kosmo reported that the man had robbed the store, which is located about 500 metres away from the station, 15 minutes before his violent assault on the 48-year-old victim.

According to Harian Metro, the 26-year-old escaped with the victim's purse after kicking and punching her in the Taman Mutiara MRT station at 6.45am on 14 February. 

The purse contained the victim's identification card, ATM card, and RM400 in cash. 

The man is being investigated under Section 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt in a robbery

Upon conviction, the man faces a maximum jail sentence of 20 years, fine, and strokes of the cane. 

Harian Metro reported that the 26-year-old will be remanded today, 19 February. 

Meanwhile, RapidKL operator Prasarana Malaysia Berhad has taken measures to beef up security at MRT stations following the assault

"We have increased the number of Special Action Taskforce (ST) members at the hotspot areas. The SAT team is a special unit set up by Prasarana's security department and staff are dressed in plain clothes when on patrol duty," the RapidKL operator said in a statement yesterday, according to Malay Mail

The company added that commuters may now request to be escorted to the parking lot if the area is deserted
