A screenshot of a WhatsApp message has been circulating on social media platforms, alleging that convicted criminal Datuk Seri Najib Razak is receiving special treatment as he is not housed in a jail cell

The screenshot was also shared on Twitter earlier this week. The account that posted it also tagged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob's official Twitter handle, asking him to "close down all prisons in Malaysia" as it has become "a lawless country" if a convicted criminal is given preferential treatment.

As of this writing, the tweet has been retweeted over 300 times.

It alleges that Najib was "given a house within the prison grounds"

According to the screenshot, the houses are "meant for senior prison officers", citing "a good friend whose cousin is a senior prison officer at Kajang" as the source of the alleged information.

The Prisons Department has, however, denied the allegations

In a brief, one-line statement issued on its official Facebook page, the Prisons Department said that the information is "fake information" and asked people to "stop spreading it".

Prior to this, the Prisons Department also denied rumours that the former prime minister would have a jail cell with hotel-like amenities:

Najib is currently serving his 12-year sentence:

He has been in and out of jail due to his other court cases and hospitalisation for a medical checkup after experiencing pain:

He, however, continues to remain the Pekan member of parliament (MP) as he has filed a petition seeking a royal pardon:
