Sarawakian singer-songwriter Alena Murang is calling out local airline companies for hiking up their air ticket prices in December and making it difficult for East Malaysians to travel home this festive season
In a Facebook post yesterday, 22 November, Alena said she is shocked at the prices of air tickets for flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching, saying that it is so expensive that "we might as well be flying to London".
The Borneo-born artiste demanded AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air, and Sarawak Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin to give the public an answer for the price hike.
Additionally, unlike flying to Sarawak, Alena found out that flying to other places in Malaysia — such as Kota Kinabalu and Langkawi — during the same period remains "affordable".
"If you knew how many tears were shed by all the Sarawakians who couldn't return home last year cause [of] lockdown, please have a heart. I mean we are the state that celebrates Christmas the most!" she said.
"On behalf of all Sarawakians, those working outside of Sarawak and those waiting for their loved ones to come home, please reduce the prices or at least give us a logical explanation for the prices."

In the post, Alena uploaded three photos showing that the prices of flight tickets from Kuala Lumpur to Kuching can go up to RM2,600
The flight ticket price for the week before Christmas averages around RM1,485.
On the first and second days of January 2022, ticket prices are RM2,400 and RM2,600 respectively.
The prices for the rest of the week are around RM1,700.

In the comments section of Alena's post, many netizens said airline companies have always hiked up their prices before Christmas
One user remarked that it was nothing new to see airfare prices hiked up during peak periods, such as festive seasons or during elections.
"True! Can travel overseas with that price," said another Facebook user.
"Oof. My flight from KL to Kuching the other day was RM2,000. But luckily, I wasn't (the one) paying," said another person.
