A woman in Rawang, Selangor has taken to social media to express her surprise after her water bill came up to RM5,000 for the month of August

In a post on Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, the user said her monthly water bills usually do not exceed RM50.

However, her current bill of RM5,277 showed that she had used 2,029 cubic metres of water, enough to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool.

Given the outrageous amount, she believes that an error occurred in the meter reading after Air Selangor replaced her water meter without her knowledge.

"There was no notice, and we had no idea it was replaced. And the meter reading must have started from 2,000 cubic metres, not 0, which means we only used 29 cubic metres of water," she surmised.

The woman said she notified Air Selangor of the issue immediately, and a customer service representative had confirmed her suspicion that the reading started from 2,000, not 0

"However, an inspector called me today and said he doesn't agree with what the customer service agent said, and would arrange for someone to come and check my meter again.

"I told him to use his brain, because even if I had a burst water pipe, would my bill have exceeded RM5,000?" she questioned, frustrated.

The concerned customer added that she has also gone to an Air Selangor counter in person to inquire about her account, but was told to go home and wait.

"Has anyone else encountered this problem?" she asked on social media.

The expensive water bill drew comments from netizens who found the situation amusing

"I almost spat my food out when I saw your water bill," said a netizen, to which the woman replied that she was initially shocked too.

Some jokingly asked if she had multiple swimming pools at home, or wanted to fill up the ocean.

Meanwhile, some netizens gave her practical advice to test if she had a burst pipe, to which the woman confirmed she did not.

"You should try switching all your water faucets off and see if your water meter moves, if yes, then it means you have a leaking pipe," suggested a user.

The Xiaohongshu user has also told SAYS that while waiting for Air Selangor to check her meter, her water reading has only risen to 2,059 — about 23 cubic metres in the past month — which proves she does not have a leaking pipe.

Air Selangor told SAYS that the case is still under investigation.

A Malaysian woman was dumbfounded when she realised that she had been paying her neighbour's electricity bills for five years:
