Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) recently released a statement confirming that security guards, among other unauthorised officers commit an offence for storing someone's identity card (IC) or identification documents

While it is illegal for condominium and apartment security guards to keep visitors' identity cards and driving licenses, here are the people who are actually authorised to inspect and store your IC:

1. Police officers

If a policeman approaches you, you are allowed to verify their police ID card. All police officers in Malaysia must show you their cards if you ask for it.

You are obliged to give your name, IC, and address if the policeman starts asking you questions.

However, if they refuse to show you their police ID, you are not obliged to show them your IC and are advised to immediately lodge a report on the matter.

2. Custom officers
