Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong announced that the deadline for renewal of driving licences and road tax will be extended until 31 December

He broke the news during a press conference today, 3 September.

According to The Star, Wee said with the extension, the public can be assured that Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcement officers and the police will not take action against those with expired Malaysian driving licences and road tax.

"Motorists with expired road tax must, however, ensure that the insurance for their vehicles is valid. They must display their insurance e-cover note for authorities to check," he added.

Besides that, JPJ counters will fully open and accept walk-in clients starting Monday, 6 September

However, Wee noted that those who want to perform transactions at JPJ counters must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and their MySejahtera profile must display a low-risk status.

He said that it is a necessary precaution to safeguard the public's health as well as that of the staff on duty during this unprecedented period.

JPJ will cease the online appointment system but people are still encouraged to use existing online services on JPJ's mySIKAP portal or the ones provided by its strategic partners.

JPJ previously announced that all road users must renew their licences by Thursday, 30 September

They uploaded a statement on Facebook, which noted that starting 1 October, JPJ officials and police officers will conduct checks to ensure that all road users have valid licences and road tax.

However, with Wee's new announcement, the previous statement is now null and void.
