UM Closes 2 Convenience Stores Over Non-Halal Ham Sandwich Concerns
The outlets will remain closed until further notice.
Universiti Malaya (UM) has closed down two convenience stores after a student alleged that ham sandwiches sold there were incorrectly labelled as halal
While the sandwiches had the halal logo, the student claimed that the logo was fake, according to a TikTok video by @pembinaum.
"As far as I know, the halal logo on the sandwich does not comply with JAKIM's specifications," the student alleged.
The video also displayed a search on the official Malaysia Halal Status Verification website, showing that neither the product nor the store holds halal certification or status.
This led to the stores being immediately closed down due to doubts about the use of the halal logo on the stores' products.

UM has released an official statement following the stores' closure
The statement mentioned that the closure was meant to facilitate investigations, and the outlets will remain closed until further notice.
UM also assured the public that all products sold on its campus are sourced from suppliers who comply with existing laws, standards, regulations, and procedures.
Meanwhile, UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said the sale of ham or pork products bearing the halal logo is unacceptable
"Do you know what ham is? It contains pork elements, including pork meat. They are selling ham and cheese in UM, where most of the students are Malay," he said.
Akmal also questioned how the product obtained a halal logo, and since when ham was considered halal.
"Okay, perhaps it is acceptable for the children of Chinese, Indian, or non-Malay parents. But look at the back, there is a halal logo," he added.
A police report has been filed, and the authorities are investigating the sale of the product, reported Malaysia Gazette.
