A woman successfully talked her ex-husband out of attempting suicide at the Rawang Bypass in Selangor on Friday, 19 February

According to Harian Metro, Gombak district police chief ACP Arifai Tarawe said police received an emergency call about the case at 1.30pm and rushed to the scene.

A team of firefighters from Rawang fire station also attended to the emergency. The bypass is known as the tallest elevated highway in Malaysia at about 60m above ground.

According to the police chief, the 50-year-old man was found standing on the ledge of the highway while hugging a lamp post when the rescue team arrived

"The police and firefighters tried to convince him to step down but the suspect refused to cooperate and threatened to jump," said Arifai, as quoted by Sinar Harian.

However in the midst of negotiations, the chief said a woman in her 50s, claiming to be the man's ex-wife, showed up at the location to persuade him from jumping.

"After some time, he stepped down from the ledge," said the police.

Investigations revealed that the couple had divorced last month and the man was newly unemployed

Arifai said the man recently quit his job as a personal driver and was making an effort to convince his wife to reconsider their divorce.

"This was the suspect's second marriage, which lasted four years. They do not have any children," he added.

The man was detained after the incident and the chief said the case will be investigated under Section 309 of the Penal Code for attempted suicide.
