In an exhilarating final of the Boccia mixed individual BC1 event earlier today, 1 September, Chew narrowly lost to world number one David Smith of Great Britain to finish second.

In the first End, Chew had stormed into a 2-0 lead after pulling off a measured display, visibly rattling Smith.

However, from that point on, the points were hotly contested, with Smith only edging out the Malaysian with a narrow one point margin in End two and three.

The Brit would then clinch the game at the death, with two points to take the final score to 2-4, thus retaining his title.

David Smith is a previous two-time Paralympic Boccia champion in the BC1 category, and was given a Member of the British Empire (MBE) title in 2017.

He had beaten Brazil in the opening game of the preliminaries 5-2, and stayed perfect throughout the opening rounds.

Chew racked up victories over world number two Witsanu Huadpradit of Thailand (4-3), world number eight Korean Sungjoon Jung (9-3), and trashed Katerina Curinova of the Czech Republic to finish top of his pool.

In the knockout rounds yesterday, 31 August, Chew cooly dispatched China and Portugal in comfortable victories – 4-2 and 9-5 respectively – before today's showpiece.

The 26-year-old Chew was making his Paralympics debut, and will take heart at the performance.

Congratulations Chew Wei Lun!
