SEA Games 2023: National Hammer Thrower Clinches Gold And Achieves New Personal Record

She hopes to break her national record of 62.48m this July at the World University Games in Chengdu, China.

National women's hammer thrower Grace Wong Xiu Mei accomplished two feats at the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games yesterday, 8 May

According to Utusan Malaysia, Wong defended her gold medal with a throw of 61.87m, unexpectedly smashing her own record of 59.24m, which was carved during the 2017 SEA Games.

Mingkamon Koomphon from Thailand claimed the silver medal with a throw of 57.62m, and bronze went to Malaysian athlete Nurul Hidayah Lukman with a throw of 49.61m.

Wong said she was very nervous in yesterday's competition but was thankful to be able to overcome those feelings and was satisfied with the outcome

"I am pleased with my current form, and happy to contribute the first gold medal for the Malaysian track and field team," said the 23-year-old, as quoted by New Straits Times.

Grace told Bernama her three months training in Chengdu, China helped her win her third SEA Games gold medal.

She won her first two gold medals during the 2017 and 2021 SEA Games.

The accounting major student added that she hopes to break her national record of 62.48m this July at the World University Games in Chengdu, China.
