[VIDEO] Shereen Ends Malaysia's 24-Year Wait For Gold In Women's 400M Race At SEA Games
'Super' Shereen lives up to her name.
'Super' Shereen Samson Vallabouy has ended Malaysia's more than two-decade-long wait for gold by comfortably winning the women's 400m race today, 9 May, at the 2023 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games
The US-based sprinter, who has been consistently breaking records prior to the SEA Games, hit the line in 52.53s to claim the gold for Malaysia. Shereen finished almost a second ahead of her rivals.
25-year-old Shereen's gold at the 2023 SEA Games today makes her the first Malaysian woman to win the coveted title, which was last won by N Manimagalay back in the 1999 SEA Games in Brunei, 24 years ago.
According to Shereen, while she had a hard time adjusting to the weather and jet lag, they were minor speed bumps on her road to gold
She shared that she is grateful to achieve what has been a long-term ambition.
"I have been working hard to win the 400m gold since I first competed at the SEA Games in 2015. This makes the hard work all worthwhile. The training I have undergone in the US has also helped me improve, especially in terms of technique," New Straits Times quoted the 25-year-old as saying.
