'Fifty Shades Freed' Takes Top Spot On Netflix After Malaysians Go Into RMO
With all the cinemas ordered to close during the two-week Restriction of Movement Order (RMO), many Malaysians have resorted to viewing their entertainment on platforms such as Netflix
But who would have thought one of the Fifty Shades of Grey film series is Malaysians' number one most-watched movie on Netflix during this period?
Since the first day of the RMO on 18 March, many Netflix users have taken to Twitter to express their amusement that the sex scene-laden movie is Malaysians' top choice
Some netizens noted that Fifty Shades Freed, the final instalment of the Fifty Shades trilogy, trended on Netflix even before the nationwide isolation started.
On 17 March, Twitter user @HedaLexa92 said, "Netflix is telling me that Fifty Shades Freed is number one streamed in Malaysia (sic)."
"I see the quarantine session has started."
"Day 1 of the RMO in Malaysia and the number one trending movie on Netflix is...," tweeted another Malaysian, showing a screenshot of the BDSM-themed movie ranking number one on the Netflix mobile app.
"F**king hell. Only a day after restriction of movement order and the Fifty Shades movie is currently the number one movie in Malaysia on Netflix. Haha," one person said while laughing.
Some netizens voiced their disappointment over their countrymen's movie choice
Meanwhile, a netizen found out that Malaysia has seen the fourth-largest surge in coronavirus-related porn consumption on Pornhub
"Malaysia secured fourth place on Pornhub. The effect of lockdown is really insane," wrote @sinneddonut.
At the time of writing, the tweet has garnered over 4,800 retweets with 5,600 likes.
According to Pornhub's insights report, searches for coronavirus-related porn is 80% more popular in Bulgaria, Ireland, Malaysia, and Serbia.
Other than the erotic romance movie, a documentary featuring former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak is also among the top 10 most-watched shows on Netflix
Today, 20 March, The Man At The Top, an episode under Dirty Money, ranked number five on the list. The 57-minute-long documentary unveils how Najib and fugitive financier Jho Low are connected to the 1MDB scandal.
