As Hello Kitty prepares for her 40th birthday, Sanrio has finally revealed the "cat's" real identity.
Image via aliimg.comThis revelation about Hello Kitty, whose real name is Kitty White, happened when Christine R. Yano, an anthropologist who is curating for an upcoming Hello Kitty retrospective at the Japanese American National Museum, was corrected by Sanrio when she called the cute icon a cat.
“I was corrected — very firmly,” Yano revealed.”That’s one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl," Christine R. Yano.
Hello Kitty is actually a little girl named Kitty White from England. Kitty is the daughter of George and Mary White, and has a twin sister named Mimmy.
As it turns out, Hello Kitty has an entire backstory created at a time when Japanese women romanticized life in England.

She lives outside of London. I could go on. A lot of people don't know the story and a lot don't care. But it's interesting because Hello Kitty emerged in the 1970s, when the Japanese and Japanese women were into Britain. They loved the idea of Britain. It represented the quintessential idealized childhood, almost like a white picket fence. So the biography was created exactly for the tastes of that time."
Hello Kitty is a "perpetual third-grader" (9 years old). She loves to bake cookies and dreams of becoming a pianist or poet one day.
