5 Easy Ways You Can Reduce Your Electricity Bill During CMCO

Save electricity, save money.

This Spotlight is sponsored by Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

According to Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), the usage of electricity within housing areas increased between 20% - 50% during the Movement Control Order (MCO)

It's a no-brainer as to why this happened. While everyone was following the government's directive to #JustStayAtHome, this caused a significant surge in electricity usage in residential sectors, which resulted in a spike in electricity bill costs.

With CMCO being implemented once again, it's become clear that Malaysians have to be ready whenever a stay-at-home directive is enforced. Keeping an eye on your electricity usage at home is no exception!

Although, Malaysians can rest assured that despite the current situation, meter reading operations will continue as normal and everyone will still receive TNB physical bills. With this in mind, you can start planning how you can start saving energy to cut back on high costs.

We've got some handy energy saving tips you can apply in your daily routine. Let's get started!

Tip #1: 5-star energy label, 5-star saving!

If this label looks familiar to you, then you're already on the right track! The Energy Commission issues these energy efficient labels to electrical appliances which save energy.

Next time you're planning to get yourself a new refrigerator to stock up on your favourite snacks, or an air conditioner to cool down from the hot weather, make sure this label is slapped on it and you're good to go.

Tip #2: Time to 'Marie Kondo' your fridge

Be honest, when's the last time you deep cleaned your fridge? It's high time you tossed out those leftovers from last week and those half-cut wilting vegetables.

De-cluttering your fridge can actually be quite therapeutic when done right. Plus, it's all worth it the next time you open your fridge for a midnight snack and everything is clean and tidy. Maximum air-flow achieved!

Tip #3: Be wiser, set a timer

Are you really going to make your aircond work throughout the night? It needs a break too you know :(

Instead, have it set to about 2-4 hours. As long as you keep your door and windows closed, the cool will last longer within your room, thus eliminating the need to have it running the entire time you're asleep. Chances are you'll be too deep in sleep to notice!

Tip #4: Let it thaw, let it thaw, let it thaw

But you already know this, don't you? All those times your mum asked you to take out those frozen chicken legs to thaw before she arrives home is starting to make sense now.

Thawing may take longer than having an oven defrost it for you, but that can be easily remedied when you plan to thaw it hours before you begin cooking. Plan your time and energy carefully.

Tip #5: Lock the doors and dim the lights down low...

If you've been sleeping with the lights on, you should know that it interferes with the production of melatonin, which are your sleep hormones. This affects your sleep cycle, which in turn affects your quality of sleep. That's right, you can save energy WHILE having a good night's sleep by dimming the lights. It's much cosier this way, anyhow.
