Earlier this year, we ran a survey among 4,238 Malaysians to find out how kotor Malaysian homes actually are

In the 'How Kotor Are Malaysian Homes?' survey, we asked Malaysians about their home cleaning habits like "What’s your usual floor cleaning routine?" and "How often do you clean your ceiling fan?".

In collaboration with Medklinn, the survey ran from 21 July to 11 August, appearing on SAYS and OhBulan!.

Here are a few interesting facts we found out about Malaysian homes:

1. 14% of Malaysians don't mop or vacuum their homes

We asked Malaysians what their usual floor cleaning routine looked like:
- 47% said they sweep, mop, and vacuum
- 34% said they sweep and mop
- 14% said they only sweep

Surprisingly, 5% of respondents said they relied on robot vacuums to do the floor cleaning for them.

2. Most people take special care of their bedroom – 85% of Malaysians change their bed sheets at least once every few weeks

While 15% of Malaysians admitted to only changing their bed sheets if it smells or stains, most Malaysians change their sheets regularly. In fact, 3 in 10 Malaysians get fresh sheets every week.

3. In fact, the bedroom is considered one of the least kotor places in the home

6. 5 in 10 Malaysians just wipe their tables with a wet kitchen cloth

When wiping down countertops, the most popular method is by using a wet kitchen cloth. Nevertheless, 3 in 10 Malaysians go a step further by using disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray to clean their tables.

A small majority of Malaysians (15%) even use special methods like water and baking soda, or a combination of warm water, vinegar, and cleaner to wipe their tables and countertops.

7. Almost 8 in 10 Malaysians don't clean their doorknobs regularly

Even though a majority of Malaysians (55%) usually try to make sure their mail is clean by wiping or sanitising before opening it, it's still worrying that Malaysians don't sterilise their packages, as sterilising is the safest form of cleaning.

What's more, an alarming 42% of Malaysians immediately open their package upon receiving it, without cleaning it at all.

9. In fact, a vast majority of Malaysians are not familiar with the hygiene benefits of sterilising their homes

Despite sterilisation being the highest form of cleaning, 80% of Malaysians do not know or are unsure about what sterilisation actually is. Only 2 in 10 Malaysians have sterilised their homes before.

Did you know that sterilising is actually the safest and highest level of cleaning?

Most of us are familiar with cleaning, which includes mopping, vacuuming, sweeping, dusting, and more. This helps to remove dirt, dust, and other particles from surfaces at home.

Sanitising or disinfecting takes it one step further by getting rid of bacteria and harmful viruses. You can sanitise by using cleaning agents like detergents or sanitisers.

However, sterilisation is the highest and safest level of cleaning, especially when it's done continuously. By sterilising the air and surfaces 24/7 at home, you can achieve a high level of hygiene and safety, thereby reducing the risk of cross infections caused by disease-causing pathogens and contaminants.
