Malaysians Can Look Forward To These Long Weekends & Holidays In 2023

We are excited about the long weekends and even longer holidays in 2023.

Now that the borders are open, holiday planning can once again commence! So flip your calendar to 2023 and begin planning.

We are not done with 2022 but the upcoming weekends in 2023 are making us wish we can jump right into the new year. 

Prepare your leaves, make the most of these long weekends, plan when to balik kampung, and beat the crowd.

Disclaimer: Long weekends in this story would refer to the Monday to Friday work week, unless stated otherwise.

There will be seven official long weekends in 2023:

New Year's Day: Saturday to Monday, 31 December to 2 January*

Chinese New Year: Saturday to Tuesday, 21 to 24 January*

Hari Raya Aidilfitri: Saturday to Monday, 22 to 24 April

Labour Day: Saturday to Monday, 29 April to 1 May

Agong's Birthday: Saturday to Monday, 3 to 5 June

Deepavali: Saturday to Monday, 11 to 13 November*

Christmas: Saturday to Monday, 23 to 25 December

PS:
— Those residing in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Terengganu will not get an off day for New Years. 
— Those residing in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu will not get a replacement holiday on Tuesday, 24 January for Chinese New Year. 
— Deepavali holiday is applicable to all states except Sarawak.

Don't know where to allocate your annual leaves? Here are the dates to maximise your holiday and get five extra long weekends:

Wesak Day: Thursday to Sunday, 4 to 7 May, or Saturday to Thursday, 29 April to 4 May, or Saturday to the next Sunday, 29 April to 7 May
— Take leave on Friday, 5 May to enjoy four days off.
— Take two days off on Tuesday, 2 May, and Wednesday, 3 May, enjoying six days of holiday.
— Take three days off and enjoy a SUPER long weekend from Saturday all through the week, on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Hari Raya Haji: Thursday to Sunday, 29 June to 2 July
— Take leave on Friday, 30 June.
— Those residing in Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis, and Terengganu, Friday, 30 June, is a holiday so no leaves need to be taken!

Awal Muharram: Saturday to Wednesday, 15 to 19 July, or Wednesday to Sunday, 19 to 23 July
— Take two days of leave on Monday, 17 July, and Tuesday, 18 July, OR take leaves on Thursday, 20 July, and Friday, 21 July. 

Merdeka Day: Thursday to Sunday, 31 August to 3 September
— Take leave on Friday, 1 September.

Prophet Muhammad Birthday: Thursday to Sunday, 28 September to 1 October
— Take leave on Friday, 29 September.

In addition to the national public holidays, if you are living or working in these respective states, you get to enjoy these holidays (with or without extra leave days):

JOHOR
Sultan of Johor's birthday: Thursday to Sunday, 23 to 26 March.
— Take leave on Friday, 24 March.

KEDAH
Awal Ramadan: Thursday to Sunday, 23 to 26 March.
— Take leave on Friday, 24 March.

KUALA LUMPUR, LABUAN, and PUTRAJAYA
Federal Territory Day: 
Wednesday to Sunday, 1 to 5 February.
— Take leave on Thursday, 2 February, and Friday, 3 February.
Harvest Festival (Labuan): Saturday to Tuesday, 27 to 31 May.
—Take leave on Monday, 29 May.

MELAKA
Awal Ramadan: Thursday to Sunday, 23 to 26 March.
— Take leave on Friday, 24 March.
Melaka Governor's birthday: Thursday to Sunday, 24 to 27 August.
— Take leave on Friday, 25 August.

Hari Hol Pahang: Saturday to Monday, 20 to 22 May.

PENANG
George Town World Heritage City Day: Friday to Sunday, 7 to 9 July.

PERAK
Sultan of Perak's birthday: 
Friday to Sunday, 3 to 5 November.

PERLIS
Raja Perlis' birthday: 
Saturday to Wednesday, 13 to 17 May, or Wednesday to Sunday, 17 to 21 May.
— Take leave on Monday, 15 May, and Tuesday, 16 May, OR Thursday, 18 May, and Friday, 19 May.

SABAH
Good Friday: Friday to Sunday, 7 to 9 April.
Harvest Festival: Saturday to Tuesday, 27 to 31 May.
— Take leave on Monday, 29 May.

SARAWAK
Good Friday: 
Friday to Sunday, 7 to 9 April.
Hari Gawai: Thursday to Sunday, 1 to 4 June.

SELANGOR
Sultan of Selangor's birthday:
 Saturday to Monday, 9 to 11 December.

TERENGGANU
Sultan of Terengganu's birthday: Saturday to Wednesday, 22 to 26 April, or Wednesday to Sunday, 26 to 30 April.
— Take leave on Monday, 24 April, and Tuesday, 25 April, OR Thursday, 27 April, and Friday, 28 April.
Arafat Day: Saturday to Tuesday, 24 to 27 June.
— Take leave on Monday, 26 June.
