If you've ever dreamt of creating interactive, immersive spaces that blend physical, augmented, and virtual realities, Taylor's University has just the programme for you

With a focus on game design, metaverse development, and multi-sensory experiences, the Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design (Honours) at Taylor's Design School is perfect for anyone interested in shaping the future of how we interact with our environments through technology.

From smart home design to creating smart environments, the world is increasingly interconnected, with spaces needing to adapt to modern technologies like digital sensors, display media, and automation.

For 21-year-old Siew Yu Hong, his passion lies in a blend of technical and creative fields

Siew was initially torn between business and computer science, but ultimately chose to pursue Interactive Spatial Design. The course offered a balance of programming and creative, exciting modules, and hands-on learning opportunities.

"One of the standout projects was collaborating with Taylor's Fashion Design students and Interactive Spatial Design industry partner, Virtual Tech Frontier to create Malaysia's first Metaverse Fashion Show using the Mitoworld platform. It combined my creative and technical expertise with the latest design trends and emerging technologies, which I found incredibly exciting," Siew said.

Winning competitions such as the Mini Business Accelerator Programme, where he secured funding, demonstrates how the programme is designed to bridge academic knowledge and industry practice. He even co-founded a startup that was part of the Camp of Leaders mentorship programme during his time at Taylor's, highlighting the entrepreneurial opportunities the university fosters.

He noted, "The Camp of Leaders initiative saw my team and I receiving invaluable guidance for our MARi by Bizzy B project from our industry mentor, Jê Alipio, the Director and Head of Business Development (Games) for Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and North Africa at The Walt Disney Company. This experience not only provided insights into industry standards and leadership that are often hard to come by in traditional educational settings but also allowed me to explore my interests in business and entrepreneurship."

Another student, Angel Hung Shi Jie, made a bold switch from marketing to pursue her true passion in Interactive Spatial Design

"Moving into this field allowed me to work on projects that fuel my passion. The programme offers a wide range of opportunities such as competitions, hackathons, and workshops and exposure to cutting-edge technologies such as Taylor’s Virtual Online Future Technology & Extended Reality (VORTEX XR Lab), which has greatly enhanced my learning experience," said the 22-year-old.

During her time at Taylor's, Angel has immersed herself in various projects that pushed her creative boundaries. She participated in AR street art competitions, where her designs brought art to life in the digital realm.

Another standout experience was collaborating on interactive metaverse spaces, a project that combined her skills in 3D modelling and application design to create immersive environments.

"However, the journey hasn't been without its challenges," Angel shared.

She embraced the opportunity to balance her academic responsibilities while also managing a start-up business, participating in competitions, and mastering complex design software such as Blender and Adobe Tools, demonstrating her commitment and resilience in tackling multiple pursuits.

"At first, the advanced functionalities of the software slowed me down, and it was challenging to manage everything at once. But through extra practice, watching tutorials, and seeking guidance from my lecturers and peers, I was able to overcome these hurdles and improve my efficiency," she explained.

Now, having honed her technical skills and enhanced her time management abilities, Angel feels ready to take on even bigger projects and push her creative boundaries further.

Taylor's University is Malaysia's first private university to offer the Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design (Honours)

This three-year, full-time degree combines spatial design theory with interactive technology, equipping students for careers in smart home and environment design to meet Malaysia's digital talent needs.

Unique to Taylor's, the programme offers a Triple Track option in the final year, where students can choose between a conventional internship, launch a startup through Taylor's BizPod, or gain industry experience with partners like HONOR Malaysia and Ministry XR.

If you're an aspiring designer looking to innovate, Taylor's University's Bachelor of Interactive Spatial Design (Honours) might be your path to shaping the future.
