Taylor's College Have Pledged RM200K To Provide Fully-Stocked Cabinets For B40 Students
These cabinets will be placed at schools and stocked with essentials such as food and wellness items all year round.
Taylor's College has just launched its latest initiative, CAREbinet by The Risers, at SMK Seri Tasik on 11 May
Organised by its student engagement arm, the initiative aims to fulfil the needs of students in underserved communities so they may excel in their academic pursuit. It is also meant to empower school communities to encourage a culture of sustainable practices for an equitable and inclusive future for everyone.
The Risers, which is a student-led community, started the initiative to address the challenges faced by families in supporting their children's education, particularly due to the increasing costs of essential goods
Understanding that this predicament is capable of affecting students' motivation and ability to attend school, Taylor's College has committed RM200,000 to support the initiative and foster positive impacts in the community.
Jabatan Pendidikan Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur (JPWPKL) deputy director of student development Zainudin Bin Mohamad said during the launch, "On behalf of JPWPKL, we extend our heartfelt congratulations and deepest gratitude to our esteemed strategic partner, Taylor's College, for their unwavering commitment and proactive efforts in spearheading the remarkable 'CAREbinet by The Risers' project.
"This noble initiative serves as a beacon of hope, aimed at uplifting educational institutions, particularly school premises, which play a vital role in shaping our society," he said.
Thus, with guidance and assistance from creative hub Mereka, The Risers ambassadors and Taylor's College students have built and distributed 14 cabinets to schools in KL
With each cabinet being made out of PolyAI (Polymer and Aluminium), which was recycled from plastic waste and used beverage cartons (UBC), the initiative highlights the importance of community involvement.
These cabinets were built by The Risers Ambassadors and students from Taylor's College while being guided by Mereka, and they will be fully stocked from March to December 2023 with essential items such as bread, rice, soup paste, instant beverages, hand soap, shampoo, deodorant, and sanitary pads.
The provision of essential items is thanks to the support of esteemed partners like Adabi Consumer Industries, Gardenia Bakeries KL, Jasmine Food Corporation, Kotex Malaysia, and Unilever Malaysia.
Here are the schools that will receive cabinets during the first phase:
- SMK (P) Air Panas
- SMK Bandar Tasik Selatan
- SMK Cheras
- SMK Cochrane Perkasa
- SMK Convent Bukit Nanas
- SMK Danau Kota
- SMK Dato' Onn
- SMK Desa Petaling
- SMK Menjalara
- SMK Seri Pantai
- SMK Seri Permaisuri
- SMK Seri Tasik
- SMK Tinggi Setapak
- SMK Wangsa Maju Seksyen 2
Taylor's College will expand its reach to more schools in the future.
Through these community partnerships, Taylor's College is able to cultivate nation-building initiatives that can make a difference to those in need
During the launch, Josephine Tan, Campus Director of Taylor's College, said they are passionate about ensuring every student has equal access to academic excellence.
"Our partners for CAREbinet by The Risers share this vision, believing that no student should be held back by their socioeconomic status.
"As a purpose-led institution, we are committed to being not only the best in the world, but also the best for the world. That's why we strive to support the causes outlined in the Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on education for all. By empowering students and promoting sustainable practices, we can make a meaningful difference in society and create a brighter future for all," she added.
On top of providing essential items, CAREbinet by The Risers will see a series of educational programmes such as talks and workshops being carried out at selected schools
Through these programmes, students will be educated on sustainable practices and gain the necessary skills and tools to champion sustainability.
Taylor's College hopes that by instilling a culture of sustainability, a lasting impact will be made, and every student will have access to the resources they need to live a thriving life.
The Risers has consistently been helping underserved communities, as seen with their Bag to School campaign with JPWPKL which helped 1,000 B40 students with school supplies last year.
