One of the largest cities in Gujarat, India, Ahmedabad has a rich architectural heritage dating all the way back to the 15th century Sultanate period. It boasts magnificent monuments like temples, mosques, and museums that portray the city's unique multicultural character.

Stepwells, also called vav in Gujarati, were built between the 5th and 19th centuries, and functioned as the primary water source for villagers. The wells also served as venues for colourful festivals and sacred rituals.

The Adalaj stepwell was built in 1499 to curb the water crisis in the Adalaj village. This octagonal stepwell is five stories deep, and its floors, platforms, and galleries depict ornate carvings of Hindu mythology and geometrical motifs.

Akshardham means the divine abode of God, and Swaminarayan Akshardham portrays the essence of Hindu mythology in its majestic architecture. Just a 40-minute drive away from Ahmedabad, it features well-tended gardens, water bodies, and a stepwell styled courtyard. However, phones, cameras, and other electronics are not allowed inside the Akshardham, so you can only take photos from the outside.

Amdavad ni Gufa is a cool underground art gallery with a roof made of multiple interconnected domes that are inspired by soap bubbles and tortoise shells. The gallery space below resembles a mysterious underground cave, and is divided by irregular tree-like columns and metal human figures. The cave walls are brilliantly painted to resemble ancient cave paintings in a contemporary context.

Built in 1499, the Dada Harir Stepwell has spiral staircases around its octagonal sidewalls that descend to multiple platform levels. It's five stories deep, and each floor is spacious enough for a large crowd to assemble. What's unique about this vav is that it also contains a mosque, a tomb, and a square pool at the bottom of the shaft.

This beautiful mosque was built in 1573 during the last year of the Gujarat Sultanate, and is one of the most popular mosques in Ahmedabad. The architectural grandeur and flawless craftsmanship of this structure have attracted history buffs, art lovers, and photographers from all over the world. This mosque is known for its iconic latticework on yellow sandstone, which depicts intertwined trees and palm foliage.
