A local service charge of RM3 will be applied to those staying in Perak from 1 January 2025 onwards

This new charge will be applied to each room per night at all accommodation service providers, including hotels, homestays, and short-term rentals such as Airbnb.

As part of the Perak Hotel Enactment 2023, which was approved in May last year, this local service charge aims to help the state improve tourism infrastructure and services.

The revenue generated from the charge will be reinvested in maintaining and upgrading tourist attractions and public facilities.

Starting 1 July, local councils have begun issuing licences to standardise hotel regulations across Perak.

Authorities stated that operators will be given a one-year grace period to comply with the new regulations.

Operators of accommodation services, including hotels, guesthouses, chalets, homestays, houseboats, and campsites, are required to obtain the relevant licence from local authorities before they can impose the RM3 local service charge on travellers by 30 June 2025.

Until then, the government will not impose any fines on operators who have not registered and applied for the licence. Operators are urged to apply immediately, with assurances that the fee will not burden them.
