We Tried Making The Viral TikTok MAGGI Terbang. Is It Really Worth The Hype?
All you need are four ingredients. :O
If you've been on TikTok recently, you've probably seen the MAGGI Terbang trend going around
If it's your first time seeing it, MAGGI Terbang literally features flying (or floating) noodles!
Plus, it's not your usual gimmicky food trend. There's no hidden structure that's holding the noodles up. In fact, it takes some culinary skill to make this food trend come to life. ;P
Wondering how to make it? We tried it out ourselves, so you can have an easy step-by-step recipe to follow along.
First things first, these are all the ingredients you need:
- MAGGI BIG Kari
- Egg
- Wheat Flour
- Cooking Oil
- Cili Padi (optional, for garnish)
Pro Tip: This recipe works with any kind of instant noodles, but try using bigger sized versions like MAGGI BIG or Korean ramyun. These have more noodles, which means your end result will terbang lebih tinggi! ;P
P.S. If you're lazy to go grocery shopping, you can get all these ingredients delivered to your doorstep conveniently from your nearest pandamart or foodpanda shops like Lotus's, Mydin, and 7-Eleven. You'll also save money, effort, and time, with deliveries as quick as 30 minutes.
STEP 1: Start by boiling the instant noodles for two minutes
Then, strain the noodles and soak in cold water to stop the cooking. Strain again until dry.
STEP 2: Drizzle some flour on the instant noodles, and lay them out on a chopping board
Drizzling flour onto the noodles will help to prevent sticking. Next, lay them on a chopping board, strand by strand, according to noodle length.
STEP 3: Wrap the noodles around the chopsticks (or fork)
First, wrap the shorter noodles around your chopsticks (or fork), making sure the noodles go all around. This step is important, as it will keep your utensil in place after the cooking process.
Next, gently lay the longer noodles on your chopsticks (or fork), and allow them to hang. The longer your noodles, the higher your final dish will terbang.
STEP 4: Fry the noodles at low medium heat until crispy
Turn your stove to low medium heat, and place the noodles in the oil. Allow the noodles to settle and fry for a few minutes until the base of the noodles starts to become crispy (this will also serve as the foundation of your MAGGI Terbang).
Using a ladle, continuously pour oil over the noodles from the top, making sure to keep the noodles in place. Do this for at least 10 minutes, until every part of the noodles becomes crispy and can stand on its own.
STEP 5: Add your soup, egg, and other garnishes
Boil water, then add in the seasoning packet and an egg, like you usually would for your MAGGI Kari. When ready, pour it into a bowl with the instant noodles you just fried. Add some cili padi for garnish, and your MAGGI Terbang is ready to serve.
But you must be wondering, how does MAGGI Terbang actually taste, and was it really worth all the hype?
Surprisingly, the MAGGI Terbang actually tasted pretty good. ;P
Since the noodles were deep fried, they almost felt like crispy yee mee. And once we broke the noodles apart and allowed it to soak in the soup, it actually added another layer of flavour.
All in all, MAGGI Terbang was worth the hype, if you do it the right way.
The first few times we tried out the recipe, it sort of failed because we cut corners here and there. For instance, we realised that if you don't take the time to sort out the noodle strands, you'll just end up with one messy lump of noodles that's really hard to fry. Or, if you don't pour the oil over the noodles long enough, the noodle shape won't be able to hold.
But when you manage to do it right, the end result is pretty cool, amirite? :P
