18-Year-Old Teen Fined RM5,000 For Trying To Bribe Policeman With RM50
The young mechanic will have to undergo five months' jail if he did not settle the fine.
An 18-year-old teen was slapped with a heavy fine after he was caught trying to offer a bribe to a policeman
He pleaded guilty for offering the bribe to Lance Corporal Mohd Farid Ahmad in front of a school
Swe Kah Fai pleaded guilty for offering the bribe in front of SRJKC Hwa Lian, Pasir Bogak, Pangkor, at 2pm on 18 April as an inducement not to issue a summon.
Swe was eventually charged in court yesterday and fined RM5,000 for bribery. He will have to undergo five months' jail if the fine is not settled.
A social evaluation report by the Welfare Department was presented to the judge before the sentencing.
A lawyer who represented the teen said the punishment was severe enough as he was a first time offender
"His arrest and remand in the lockup is already a lesson for him. As a youngster, not going to prison will ensure a future for him and reflect the court's mercy," he said, adding that the youth earned RM600 a month.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Agency (MACC) asked the court to impose an appropriate sentence since corruption is on the rise among youths
"The sentence should serve as a lesson for him as well as the community to create awareness that corruption is serious," said DPP Nurul Wahida Jalaluddin from the MACC as quoted by The Sun Daily.
A report last year revealed that over 1,000 individuals arrested for corruption were under the age of 40.
