Vinosiny Sivakumar was found dead in her hostel room at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) in Sintok, Kedah, on 21 May last year.

It's been nine months since then, however, the police have yet to conclude their investigation into the 20-year-old UUM student's death.

According to Higher Education Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the ministry has not been informed about the result of the police investigation into Vinosiny, who was found dead in her hostel room.

Khaled was answering a question posed by Klang member of parliament (MP) V Ganabatirau in Dewan Rakyat yesterday, 14 February, during which he added that as such, he will not comment further.

Khaled, who is Kota Tinggi MP, expressed sympathy for Vinosiny's family while stating that her death is still under police investigation

He said that the ministry takes the welfare and safety of students, especially those on campuses, seriously and that it has taken several steps to prevent the same incident from happening again.

Among the steps taken, the ministry has ordered all the institutions to re-evaluate the safety of their respective premises, strengthen their governance and management of building maintenance, and periodic audits on building maintenance and student safety with reports to be submitted to the ministry, he added.

Vinosiny died a week after she returned to campus

Her father, R Sivakumar, had said that she returned to campus to continue the fourth semester of her accounting and information system studies on 14 May and on 21 May, he was informed about her death.

A week after, UUM issued a gag order against students from speaking publicly, organising or attending any events related to the 20-year-old student's death.
