Another detainee was found dead in police custody, this time in Tampin. A 43-year-old former engineer has suddenly died while in police lock-up in Tampin on 1 June 2013, furthering igniting the issue of police brutality.

State police chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Osman Salleh said a coroner and a pathologist had examined the remains of P. Karuna Nithi (pic) and both have said there were no bruises or external injuries on the deceased to suggest abuse.

“We are waiting for the final post-mortem report to see if the deceased suffered any internal injury. But as of now, the pathologist is unable to establish the cause of death,” he told reporters here.

A 43-year-old man died at the Tampin, Negri Sembilan lock-up yesterday, raising the number of deaths under the police watch that have already claimed the lives of five people this year.

It was learnt that P. Karuna Nithi was discovered unconscious by policemen on duty around 6.30pm. Police called for an ambulance from Tampin Hospital, but paramedics pronounced Karuna dead when they arrived at the scene.

The family does not know the cause of Karuna’s death yet.

However they claimed that they found blood at the back of Karuna’s head and that there were marks on his left arm.

The family of P Karuna Nithi from Gemencheh, Tampin, was informed by a police personnel at about 9.45pm last night that he has died suddenly in Tampin district police headquarters.

Negeri Sembilan MIC chairman Datuk T Rajagopalu said the family of P. Karuna Nithi, 42, were shocked as they were making arrangements to raise the money to bail him out after a Magistrate's Court allowed RM4,000 bail on Friday.

P. Karuna Nithi was arrested for hitting his wife

Karuna was arrested by police on Monday after he allegedly hit his wife on the head with a helmet in Taman Muhibbah, Gemenceh.

According to Karuna’s brother Elam, the former was arrested on May 29 following a misunderstanding with his wife. Karuna and his wife have two children, aged 13 and 15. He was then remanded for three day before being charged at the Tampin magistrate’s court on May 31.

He was charged at the Tampin magistrate's court on Friday under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing hurt by dangerous means.
