In April, Malaysian public universities were also left out of the this year’s ranking of the annual Times Higher Education Top 100 Universities under 50 years old. Malaysia failed to get on the list for the second year running. In the first rankings list in 2012, UKM was ranked 98th.

The country was also absent from the Times Higher Education World Reputation rankings list released in March, losing out to other Southeast Asian countries.

Meanwhile, Japan, Singapore, And Hong Kong Universities Took The Top 3 Spots. Other Countries That Entered The List Are Korea, China, India, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Israel, Turkey, Iran And Lebanon.

Japan is still the number one nation in the rankings – with 20 representatives in the top 100. By contrast, mainland China has gained three new representatives in the rankings, taking its total to 18. South Korea takes the third spot with 14 universities, including three in the top 10, while Taiwan falls from second to fourth place with 13 representatives.

Even India made outstanding progress with 10 institutions in the top 100, compared with only three last year. The Middle East was also well represented, with universities from Iran, Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Turkey making the list.

Thailand made the grade too (2 unis), “but there is no place for Malaysia”, Times Higher Education noted about the Southeast Asian nation where tertiary education has become a significant industry.

Singapore has two highly placed universities in the ranking, NUS at second spot and Nanyang Technological University at 11th position. Hong Kong was named the star performer by THE, given its size, and the fact that it had six universities the top 50 of the ranking.

The Top 100 Were Determined Based On 13 Different Performance Indicators

Like the overarching THE World University Rankings, the Asia rankings, for which data are collected and analysed by Thomson Reuters, use 13 indicators to examine performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. Research income, research reputation and research influence (measured in terms of “citation impact”, ie, how many times research is cited globally) are all among the measures.
