Top 6 Ways To Get To KLIA/KLIA2 And How Much It Costs Compared To The ERL

Sort out your transportation woes with this handy guide.

The price hike of Express Rail Link (ERL) tickets to KLIA and KLIA2 were not received well on social media after the announcement on 1 December. RM55 for a one-way trip sounds steep, what with the recent increase of toll rates by up to 140% in the Klang Valley.

Here are some of the new fare rates as found on the KLIA Ekspres website:

Other than the ERL, here's a list of the most convenient ways of getting to the airport, ranging from the cheapest to most expensive:

Prices below are based on solo traveling. Cab rides would be more economical if you're traveling with one or two more people, of course.

1. Take the bus

Express Coach
Where: KLIA to KL Sentral and vice versa
Fare: For one-way trips, adult tickets are priced at RM10 and children are at RM6. For a return trip, adult tickets are priced at RM18 and children are at RM10
Departure time: Every 30 minutes
Travel time: 1 hour

Star Shuttle
Where: From KL Sentral/Pudu Raya/Batu 3 or Jalan Ipoh, to and from KLIA
Fare: RM10 one-way
Departure time: 4.15am to 10.30pm from Pudu Raya and 5.15am to 12am from KLIA
Travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes

OR

Depart from hotel(s) at KL town centre to KLIA
Fare: RM20 from your hotel and RM18 from KLIA
Travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Skybus

Departure time: 3am to 12am from KL Sentral and 5am to 2.45am from KLIA2
Travel time: 1 hour 15 minutes

Aerobus
Where: Petaling Jaya (Paradigm Mall), Klang (Premiere Hotel), and Kuala Lumpur (1 Utama)
Fare: RM9 for transit to PJ and KL, RM12 to Klang
Travel Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

2. Take the train

Although the Express Rail Link (ERL) service is set to be RM20 more expensive at RM55 effective 1 January 2016, it is deemed the fastest and most reliable mode of transportation to the airport. It's extremely punctual too.

Where: KL Sentral to KLIA and KLIA2
Fare: RM55 one way, RM90 for a return trip if booked online

KLIA Ekspres is cutting a deal with MasterCard to reduce the hefty price to RM40, only RM5 more than the previous RM35 rate.

How to get cheaper tickets:
1. Discounts up to 20% are available when using certain credit cards
2. Get 10% off when you buy tickets online through the mobile app and from ERL’s kiosks
3. Use your Touch ‘n Go card to save 10% during the promotion period
4. Save RM10 by purchasing return tickets between KL Sentral and the airport

If you use the train daily:
1. A new 44-trip Monthly TravelCard will be offered
2. TravelCard users will enjoy discounts of 17% – 83%, with an average discount of 45%

Senior citizens and disabled persons receive discounts of 30% on one-way fares on the KLIA Transit.

3. Park your car 2.8km away from KLIA and take a free shuttle to the airport

Park at Sama-Sama Hotel

Fee: RM45 a day if you park in the basement, RM30 a day for valet parking.
Travel time: 2 minutes

4. Book a taxi

If you're lugging a bit of luggage with you to the airport, book a taxi in advance through a range of service providers like MyTeksi for affordable rates.

Fare: RM70-RM80 for a budget taxi and RM150 for a executive taxi (rough estimate)
Travel time: Roughly 50 minutes depending on traffic

5. Hitch a ride with Uber

Uber is usually preferred over taxis for its ease of use via its application.

Fare: RM90 flat rate for UberX
Travel time: Roughly 50 minutes depending on traffic

6. Book a car via GrabCar

GrabCar is another great way to travel in comfort and have a sense of security via its Share My Ride function that allows one to track the passenger in real time.

Fare: RM80-RM110 with Grabcar Economy
Travel time: Roughly 50 minutes depending on traffic
