Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has just been appointed as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia after the historic 15th General Election (GE15)

The Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairperson's oath-taking ceremony takes place at 5pm today, 24 November.

The Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah today consented to the appointment of Tambun member of parliament (MP) Anwar as Malaysia's 10th Prime Minister.

In a statement, the Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara said the appointment was made in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

Political uncertainty continued to plague the country post-GE15 amidst negotiations between the leading coalitions.

Left with no choice, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong decided to appoint the prime minister after meeting with the Conference of Rulers today.

The appointment was finalised after His Majesty deliberated the opinions of the Malay Rulers, who convened a special meeting at Istana Negara today to make the best decision for the country.

Anwar is expected to lead a unity government

It's believed that Barisan Nasional (BN) will join the unity government.

While Harapan won 82 seats, and Perikatan Nasional (PN) came in second with 73 seats, BN — despite suffering its worst-ever defeat in elections — became a de facto "kingmaker" due to its 30 seats.

To form a unity government of the simple majority, both PH and PN needed 112 seats or more.

Amidst the political impasse, the only viable solution that came up was the formation of a unity government. However, when Perikatan refused the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's suggestion for it to form a unity government with Harapan, the Agong then decreed that Barisan back the formation of such a unity government.
