Last week, it was reported that MAVCOM executive chairman General (Rtd) Tan Sri Abdullah Ahmad earns a whopping RM85,000 a month

The exorbitant amount was confirmed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who added that the Malaysian Aviation Commission (MAVCOM) chief's salary is more than four times that of the Prime Minister, who earns RM20,000 plus per month.

Turns out, that's not even the highest salary earned by heads of statutory bodies and government-linked companies. Citing a source, The Sun reported that Abdullah is actually one of the lowest paid chairmen in such bodies.

The source revealed that some commission chairmen actually earn around RM150,000 to RM180,000 per month.

As for Abdullah, his salary was only decided after studying the salary structure of other statutory bodies.

The source said that his salary was "lower than others" because it was decided that the "supposed market rate" for other commission chairmen should not apply to MAVCOM as it does not have a chief executive.

The source also revealed that statutory bodies such as PEMANDU paid their directors, who were "nothing more than glorified managers", about RM100,000 a month

The source told The Sun that some of those directors were previously earning below RM10,000 before moving to the Performance Management & Delivery Unit (PEMANDU), a unit under the previous government's Prime Minister's Department.

"All salaries of those working at statutory bodies should be reviewed and they should be paid according to the job they do," the source said, adding that those heading such bodies should realise that they are serving the public and hence, should not expect high salaries.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke recently stressed that such high salaries will be reviewed after reports emerged about the MAVCOM chief's RM85,000 monthly salary:
