China Woman Discovers She's Biologically Male After Doctors Find Testicle In Her Abdomen
The 27-year-old woman from China was looking forward to her wedding prior to the doctor's examination.
A woman in China recently found out that she is biologically male after doctors discovered a testicle in her abdomen
According to South China Morning Post, the 27-year-old woman, whose pseudonym is Li Yuan to protect her identity, was looking forward to her wedding prior to the doctor's examination.
The discovery came as a surprise even though Li was diagnosed with abnormal hormone levels and potential ovarian failure when she was 18
As a teenager, Li was concerned about her absent menstruation and lack of breast development.
At the time, doctors suggested a chromosome test as a follow-up, but Li and her family didn't heed the doctors' recommendation.
It was only until recently, when Li was about to be married, that she decided to undergo a thorough medical examination.
Doctors found that Li has male sex chromosomes but appears female due to a rare disorder called congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
The rare condition only affects about every one in 50,000 babies.
CAH is an inherited disorder affecting hormone production in the adrenal glands, leading to hormone imbalances, which can cause various symptoms like abnormal genitalia, early puberty, and fertility issues.
Veteran gynaecologist, Duan Jie, who diagnosed Li said, "Socially, Li is female. But chromosomally, she is male."
Due to the condition, Li also has early-onset osteoporosis and vitamin D deficiency.
