Piles of rubbish were dumped indiscriminately on the side of the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) highway near the Taman Beringin rubbish transfer station after the station’s main operator, Umpan Jaya Sdn Bhd, decided to stop operations abruptly.

The dumping took place between Friday night and the wee hours of yesterday as lorry drivers transporting garbage found gates to the waste transfer station locked and unmanned.

Ahmad Phesal said the contractors were transporting waste from several hotels and supermarkets in the city.
“They (the contractors) were waiting for the gates at the Taman Beringin Transfer Station to open but after waiting for some time, they decided to leave the waste by the roadside,” he said.

It was learnt that the company abandoned the station on Friday night. At the same time, it denied rubbish collection contractors entry to the station, forcing them to dump their load by the side of the MRR2.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) Director-General Datuk Salleh Yusop, when contacted by Bernama, said the waste transfer station at Taman Beringin, Jinjang, had been closed due to a faulty waste incinerator.

“The Taman Beringin Transfer Station has been facing problems since 2011 after Umpan Jaya Sdn Bhd was appointed by City Hall to manage it,” Ahmad Phesal said.
“Due to the inability and incapability of the company, they were unable to operate the station as expected.

A waste transfer station is a collection point for rubbish transferred there by lorries. The waste is then compacted before being stuffed into larger trucks to be transferred to the landfill, mainly 70km away to the Bukit Tagar landfill in Berjuntai Bestari, Selangor.

Over the past few months, drivers had complained about the long queues to enter the facility and two of its four waste-sorting machines had broken down.

A check by the New Sunday Times yesterday afternoon found City Hall enforcement officers and Alam Flora contractors controlling traffic.
Clearing work was being carried out by 30 Alam Flora workers and it went on until 7pm. They also washed the road.

At the affected highway stretch, Alam Flora had sprayed water and treated it with effective micro-organisms which will neutralise the smell of rubbish and treat waste water without harmful chemicals.

DBKL Will Investigate The Matter

DBKL Director-General Datuk Salleh Yusop, when contacted by Bernama, said workers were sent to the area after DBKL was informed of the matter.

“DBKL will investigate the matter,” he added

“The company was unable to continue the management and they were supposed to hand over the management of the transfer station to DBKL at the end of next March.

“However, they left suddenly. We will take action against the operator,” he said in a phone interview.
